Abstract

The objective was to verify the knowledge of nursing staff regarding the proper execution of electrocardiogram (ECG) examinations. This is a cross-sectional, analytical, quantitative study, carried out in a hospital in the Brazilian Midwest. A non-probabilistic sample consisted of nurses working in the aforementioned hospital. A knowledge assessment questionnaire was developed and validated for data collection. Simple frequency and central tendency and dispersion analyses were performed, adopting the chi-square test, with a significance level of 5%. Twenty nurses participated in the study, the majority being female, with a mean age of 34.6 years. An association was found between gender and knowledge about the purpose of the electrocardiogram (p=0.004); and the completion of a course on electrocardiography was associated with knowledge about the number and types of leads in a conventional electrocardiogram (p=0.004; p=0.001). The sector showed how many there are (p = 0.010) and the level of training with which the derivations are (p = 0.001). It is concluded that there is a need to strengthen continuing education processes for the nursing team, especially nurses, in order to improve care and promote greater patient safety during hospitalization.
