Rescue and Clinical Care of a Road-Injured Cougar (Puma concolor) in the Barra do Garças Region, Mato Grosso, Brazil: A Case Report
Abstract
The aim of this study was to report the rescue of a cougar (Puma concolor) struck by a vehicle in Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso, Brazil, highlighting the procedures performed, clinical and laboratory findings, and the importance of specialized veterinary care for wildlife conservation. This case report was based on clinical evaluation, laboratory and imaging examinations, clinical follow-up, and a literature review on the management of polytraumatized wild animals. Multiple fractures involving the cervical and thoracic vertebrae, a complete fracture of the left humerus, and hematological and biochemical abnormalities consistent with severe trauma were identified, indicating a poor prognosis. Due to the extent of the injuries, the impossibility of rehabilitation, and the inability to reintroduce the animal into the wild, euthanasia was performed. This case highlights the importance of integrated efforts among rescue teams, veterinarians, and Wildlife Screening Centers, as well as strengthening public policies aimed at wildlife conservation.
