Detection of Enteroparasitic Structures in Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) Sold at the Open-Air Market in the City of Barra do Garças, MT

Abstract

Lettuce (*Lactuca sativa*), being widely consumed raw in Brazil, can harbor parasitic structures, posing a potential public health risk. This study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of enteroparasites in lettuce sold at the open-air market in the municipality of Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso (MT). This was an observational, descriptive study in which 60 lettuce samples were collected between May and July 2024 from five different stalls. Following analysis using the spontaneous sedimentation technique and microscopy, it was found that 60% of the samples were contaminated, while 40% were free of parasites. Cysts of *Giardia lamblia* (21.7%) and *Entamoeba* spp. (20%) were identified, as well as eggs of *Ascaris lumbricoides* (11.7%) and *Hymenolepis nana* (6.6%). These results confirm local contamination and underscore the urgent need for good hygienic-sanitary practices during the production, sale, and washing of these vegetables prior to consumption.
