Assessment of oxygen saturation in smokers and non-smokers before and after physical exertion on the Christ Statue Staircase in Barra do Garças, MT.

Abstract

The study aimed to evaluate changes in peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) in smokers, former smokers, and non-smokers before and after physical exertion on the Cristo Staircase in Barra do Garças, Mato Grosso, Brazil. This was a quantitative and descriptive study involving 60 participants over 18 years of age. Data were collected through a questionnaire and SpO₂ measurement using a pulse oximeter before and immediately after climbing approximately 1,200 steps. Smokers showed the greatest mean variation in SpO₂ (6.50 percentage points), followed by former smokers (3.91) and non-smokers (2.27). Comorbidities showed different magnitudes of variation; however, the small number of participants prevented conclusive comparisons. The frequency of physical activity also showed no linear relationship with SpO₂ variation. It is concluded that the results suggest a possible association between smoking status and greater SpO₂ variation, although they do not allow a causal relationship to be established.
